Styling for Men : How to dress like Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp, for me, is one of the most influential style icons when it comes to men's clothing.  Such a style makes me think why I don't see more of it when I'm out and about.  The truth is, when I walk down the road, its either jeans and a t-shirt or a track-suite, both of which are perfectly fine;  if you're comfortable with the way you look and feel...that's great!

But who's to say men shouldn't be able to make a statement with their clothing?  It's true, dressing as unique as Johnny Depp on a day-to-day basis (without being a world class actor) might look a tad out of place. Popping down to Sainsbury's wearing ripped jeans, a dark brown waistcoat, bangles half the way up your arm and a hat, I can understand if that's too much.

However, likewise to women's fashion, we can take little snippets from a flamboyant way of dressing and make it our own.  Here's just a few ways of doing so...

as-cosy-as-can-be: Yummie:

Texture

A common aspect of this style is layering up the textures.  This picture shows a suede fronted waistcoat and what looks to be a regular leather back.  Leather also seem to be an easy option for creating difference in and outfit. A cotton shirt underneath a jacket or waistcoat like this is perfect! A long as it doesn't look like your bog-standard work shirt with a big collar, you're on you're way. Johnny wears small collared shirts a lot and tends to roll the sleeves up. This looks extremely flattering. If you're not a fan of short sleeves, a long sleeved shirt rolled up to three quarter length also gives the same 'messy' look.  Experiment with different textures, it all depends on how Deppified you want to go; I'd say the look above is pretty neutral...not too out there.

Johnny Depp. Like these types of unisex type shirts for men and women. Bohemian or older style clothes. They are almosy classy or refined and casual at once.:

Jewellery

There's no doubt about it, most men have an ignorance to wearing jewellery.  But look at it!!! You have to trust in that fact that Johnny looks so cool with bangles, bracelets and necklaces. You might even think you can't pull it off, but give it a go, as long as it's with the right clothes it's all fine.
Beads, leather string, and silvers. Anything you see in those quaint little shops on holidays, hippie shops, basically make it look like you're well travelled ;D. Wearing jewellery with fairly basic clothing such as this baggy gypsy top (roll up those sleeves to give the illusion of less fabric) means you don't look to much. You don't need six different necklaces if you don't want to, just one or two will do.

Definitely a gypsy babe:

Jeans

To sum up the jeans: ripped, acid washed, denim. Usually baggy and frayed at the ankles, not like the skinny fit we see these days. Again, try keeping the top minimalistic if you're not wanting to go all out, but if you are... patterned tops can be really effective, shirts with a double denim effect like the one above with pockets and such.

Other accessories

Now this is where you can really experiment. Lets take a white t-shirt and blue ripped jeans. Simplistic.
Add a wide rimmed hat (stick some feathers in it if you're feeling it) generally more worn in hats of black or brown, fabric or leather look best.  A lightweight scarf just to wrap around can distract from any undone buttons and add to the effect of the necklaces. Lastly, who can forget the old faithful glasses? You're look won't be complete without them, any weather can require the need of glasses, so don't feel stupid about wearing them. dark shades, coloured shades or if you actually need prescribed glasses, go for some brown rimmed roundish shaped ones.

When styling this look, all you need to remember is to buy things that don't look brand spanking new, buy rips, worn in, almost grungy/ bohemian.

In the end, you just have to be confident in what you're wearing. Imagine seeing someone wearing the picture above in a shop.  If they were clearly unconfident and uncomfortable, they would bring more attention to themselves than someone who looked quietly confident.

Stella McCartney Spring 2016

 Stella McCartney Spring 2016

What delights we can see at the recent Stella Spring 2016 show held in New York this week. Vibrant colours, never seen before animal prints and clean cut geometric styling.  Such a wide range of clothing within one collection is typical of Stella McCartney, and this time certainly isn't an exception.

As soon as I saw this incredible collection, the one that caught my eye was the shirt and trouser combo pioneering the use of animals as a print.  The wild cat repeated on a silk black shirt contains some beautiful dyes, made to look almost Aztec or even slightly psychedelic.  As we all know, silk is a fine fabric for the use of colour, the combo really brings out the unique qualities of the silk; who can resist that soft weightless fabric on your skin in the Spring breeze?

From one extreme to the other, highlighting exactly how versatile Stella' designs are, is that of the rigid cut, block coloured almost business like garments.  I have seen an increasing amount of sleeveless suite jackets appear on the scene recently, Stella has adopted this idea in a way that really mirrors what I think when I here the name 'Stella McCartney'.   this particular piece seen third from the right expresses that modern tailored style, yet the twist comes in the tunic type cut, allowing that little bit of leg.

Perhaps a gateway to Summer, a long flowing shapeless maxi dress is the way forward.  The type of bohemian cut, colour and fabrics are coming back in.  I should imagine ( like most of Stella' work) you would need a confident stride to properly wear the garment,  but with a collection like this...I
don't think anyone could resist.

Lily Rose Depp: Chanel

Lily-Rose Depp: Chanel

Although this event was quite a while ago now, I Still felt it necessary to appreciate how well Lily-Rose Depp wore the beautiful Chanel two piece at the Chanel Paris-Salzburg 2014 on
the 1st of April.

The amazing pastel set consisted of a strapless crop top along with a delicate pencil skirt and can only be described as the iconic Chanel suite. A gently woven fabric bonded with subtle sparkles that contrast with the duck-egg blue entirety of the combo.  And how can we forget about that eye-catching choker?  Lily's already slender neck is extenuated beautifully by the natural curves of the necklace.  What better ambassador could Chanel have asked for?

With Lily-Rose Depp only being 15 at the time, her youthful elegance and innocence is not destroyed by the outfit.  She can still be seen as young despite the maturity of the whole event and obviously the lifestyle she was born into.  It's certainly safe to say that Lily-Rose Depp looks individual, confident and radiant wearing the Chanel outfit.

She has understandably been kept out of the limelight for the majority of her life, but after this...she's been everywhere!

Just a chat...

Hello!

This isn't going to be long, and as you can see by the title, it's just a little chat to keep on top of things.

Firstly,  I wanted to say a small thank you as I can see my blog is becoming more popular.  It's such a nice feeling to see the page views increase each week, not only that ; everyone's from all the way around the world! (that's pretty cool).  It would be really appreciated if anyone reading this post could tell their friends who also share an interest in fashion, or if you are a blogger yourself, I'm always up for getting more inspiration off others. So feel free to leave comments on post suggestions or advice: also if you have a blog you want me to look at.

Lastly, I'm thinking of using my own photography but I can't do that if I don't have a camera (shockingly) so my next post might have to wait for a month or two while I think about it.  I don't want you to think I have forgotten or ' can't be bothered '

Hopefully Christmas was great...thank you!     :)

The Clothes Show Live Birmingham : 2014

It was last weekend that I went to The Clothes Show Live in Birmingham.  As a keen fashion enthusiast, you might describe this experience as heavenly, utopian or even idealist. Grandiose in the world of clothes, beauty and hair.

I tried to capture the catwalk show although, I won't lie, my mind was completely in a world of it's own and I nearly forgot to take any pictures at all.  So despite the only pictures I have being rather a small amount, I hope they show you just how amazing it was.

My amount of bags was also on the small side compared to others.  I'll show you what I personally got that day ( much to my delight ).

For all of those celebrity hunters out there...you would have had a field day at The Clothes Show.  From Made In Chelsea to The Only Way Is Essex and Peter Andre.  It's hard not to see someone famous than it is to see them. I certainly passed Andy, Jamie and Stevie from MIC, Tom (I think that's his name anyway, the one with the blue eyes) from TOWIE and saw Peter Andre in the catwalk show.  I didn't however see Proudlock  ( gutted! ) or Spencer from MIC.  I wouldn't encourage idolising these people as when you meet them you realise they are just the same as me and you. But then again- each to their own.

I would however strongly encourage anyone to go to The Clothes Show. Its expensive but well worth it!  Even bring along your husband or boyfriend, I saw quite a few acting "bored"; we all know they love it really.

Overall a great day out, I even got advice on possible universities that I might be interested in.  Textiles courses to fashion journalism,  opportunities that you never get told about at school.

If you went to The Clothes Show this year (or any year for that matter).  You will know that it is goodie bag heaven! My one of two goodie bags is Barry M, each bag contained a pink makeup bag containing all in the photo below. In order, consisting of: a lip pen, eye pencil, 6 random nail varnishes, 2glitter dust pots, a lip balm and a sparkly liquid eyeliner.  according to the lady, each one of these pink bags contains £50 worth of makeup, all for 10 quid! As I said, well worth it.

I avoid buying jumpers as much as I can as every time I feel ripped off, paying £30 or more for something I would not expect to keep me that warm at all.  This jumper is AMAZING.  From the vintage section at The Clothes Show. It's the thickest jumper I own, made of pure wool (itchy I know!). It's oversized on me which makes it all the more comfy. The best news is all the jumpers on this rail were £15.

Again from the vintage section, a whole rail of baseball jackets.  This particular one was £40, luckily both the jumper and the jacket were Christmas presents!  Admittedly this is still expensive, but I would expect to pay this anywhere for any jacket or coat.  Considering this has a lining and is well made I think it's well worth the money.

This quaint little bag is that of the stall "So Susan".  I hadn't heard of this brand before but it proved to be quite a good purchase.  For £5, this goodie bag contained a 4 shade eye shadow palette, a lip dome, an 8 hour cheek tint, a mascara and a dual brow kit.  it sounds silly, but the one thing that attracted me to this bag was the packaging and once I saw the product packaging I was even more pleased.  not only this but So Susan is against animal testing likewise to Barry M, one thing I that is very hard to find in makeup brands.

So that's what I bought on the day of The Clothes Show.  Here are the photos I took of the catwalk. Hopefully you can see the clothes, If you want to see this in real life...book for next year! A decision you will never regret.
